Why this petition matters

We, the undersigned, are calling on the Congress of The United States of America to create a comprehensive bill that would make any hate crime that involves the killing of African Americans a federal crime. Also, to include the immediate arrest and apprehension of the accused subject or subjects with no bail. Also, we are calling for new legislation that addresses Police reform on brutality and further training that will facilitate better community engagement and strengthen relationships.

We, as a nation, have stood by far too long and allowed the murdering of innocent black men by Police officers such as Derek Chauvin and white supremacists such as those as Dylann Roof. Every day we see more and more African American men being harassed, beaten, or killed on the streets in public or the news. There has been no Justice! In Brunswick, Georgia, Ahmaud Arbery was jogging when two white supremacists with deep ties to law enforcement grabbed their guns, hunted him down, and killed him. Despite the overwhelming evidence and public outroar, It took months for Gregory McMichael, and his son Travis to be arrested and charged. Recently in Minneapolis Minnesota, George Floyd died at the hands of "those who sworn to serve and protect" our communities but instead suffered from Police brutality and murder. He was treated worse than an animal while pleading for help and that he couldn't breathe while a white police officer held him down with a knee pinned heavily to his neck.

Racism is growing stronger every day, and hate crimes are on the rise. How many more Aiyana Jones, Timothy Caughman's, Botham Jean, George Floyd, and James Byrd Jr must we endure before our congressional leaders wake up and realize what's happening? I am a white mother with black children who worries my children could quickly become the next victim of a racist homicide. I fear death waits for them at any moment while on their way to school, or visiting a friend in a different community. I am frustrated and exhausted by the feeling of uncertainty.

The time is now to act once and for all. We, one Nation under God, with Freedom, Liberty, and Justice for all, must no longer lead by talk but lead by example. Congress has a moral and ethical responsibility it owes to the African American Community. Its time for America to start protecting the African American community. No human being should be murdered because of their gender, disability, age, sex, gender identity, race, religion, color, creed, national origin, and sexual orientation.

Let us not forget the names of those below who were deprived of the freedom to live in peace and taken from this world.
