Sandbridge Beach: No Cars in Our Yards!
Sandbridge Beach: No Cars in Our Yards!
Why this petition matters
We the undersigned residents of Sandbridge, members of the Sandbridge Beach Civic League, and other concerned citizens respectfully request the City of Virginia Beach discontinue its ongoing efforts to expand public parking on private property that adversely impacts Sandbridge Beach property owners.
Initiating the use of Right of Ways and placing on-street and public parking on private property to create parking spaces, is a poor substitute for the existing problem of too few parking spaces at the city lots in Sandbridge. This action intrudes upon the front and side yards of property owner’s homes and more importantly the exponential impact to public safety.
We are respectfully requesting City Council not to allow any public parking on private property and to seek suitable and safe areas for parking expansion as noted by the signatures below.
· Public safety - Witnessed multiple vehicular accidents, some nearly hitting pedestrians, including small children.
· Narrow street/cul-de-sacs - Emergency vehicles are unable to travel down these congested streets causing delay in aid. Two-way streets effectively become one-way streets. Many are narrow like Marlin Lane at only 18 feet wide and if parking is added on both sides of street, the result is 15 feet wide with larger parked vehicles.
· Maintenance/Trash – The constant littering of trash, personal items and drug paraphernalia that homeowners must clean up once parking spots are vacated.
· Public urination/Indecent exposure – This is now commonplace in many of these areas. Citizens don’t want to encounter these same problems in their own front yards, some within 30 feet of their front doors.
