Convict the police who have murdered Indigenous Australians in custody
Convict the police who have murdered Indigenous Australians in custody
Why this petition matters
Many Indigenous Australians have lost family and friends to the shocking police brutality in Australia.
Since the royal commission into Indigenous deaths in custody in 1987, there have been 432 Indigenous deaths in custody, along with 0 convictions.
Recently with the Black Lives Matter movement amazing progress has been made around the world, but the murderers of innocent Indigenous Australians have not seen consequences.
David Dungay said “I can’t breathe” 12 times before he passed away while being restrained by 5 guards in Sydney jail. His family has expressed solidarity with the family of George Floyd, but also expressed that the footage of Floyd’s death was traumatic for the family and brought bad memories of David’s death.
None of the prison guards have been disciplined for the death of David Dungay, and neither have the murderers of any other Indigenous people.
Scott Morrison tells protesters not to ‘import’ the issue of Black Lives Matter, but the movement is just as essential in Australia as it is everywhere else. Indigenous people are still oppressed, but Australia continues to act like all reparations have been made, and as if racism is a thing of the past.
Convicting the murderers wouldn’t fix all of Australia’s issues, but it would be a step in the right direction. You can help by making an effort to dismantle racist systems in communities and businesses.
