Why this petition matters

Started by Roxy Palmer

On March 16, 2020, District 38’s (D38) schools, including Bear Creek Elementary, Prairie Winds Elementary, Lewis Palmer Elementary, Palmer Lake Elementary, Kilmer Elementary, Lewis Palmer Middle School, Lewis Palmer High School, and Palmer Ridge High School, transitioned from in-person learning to fully online, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both teachers and students hurriedly tried to figure out Google Classroom, Canvas, and McGraw Hill as they tried to finish what was left of the school year. Students would spend seven to eight hours a day on their devices. Some days were a maximum of ten hours as students tried to participate in Zoom calls, write essays, and watch videos. Even though most middle- and high-schoolers were old enough to complete their assignments themselves, many younger students required constant attention from their parents to help do their work. The three months that we were in online school were thrown off the rails; high schools did not do finals, and all graduations were canceled or postponed.

On July 18, 2020, Jared Polis, governor of Colorado, gave permission to start full-week in-person schooling to all of Colorado. D38 released a plan for the new school year, including both a fully in-person option and a fully online option. On July 28, however, D38 made the decision to start the school year with a hybrid model instead. The model includes students going to school two days a week and remote learning for three. This is a problem for a stable education because students only will get two days of instruction and three days of homework. This model puts students who want to go to college in danger of not graduating because they won’t know everything that they should know. When this new plan for the 2020-2021 school year was announced, concerns immediately arose. Will bouncing between school and the internet interfere with students’ learning? Will the students actually comprehend and be able to test on the material?  Can working parents take care of their kids? That being said, we do have to realize that this decision was not made by the Governor. It was made by D38. The more signatures we receive, we can not only change the schedule, but we can choose which learning strategy we want for our students: full time, online, or hybrid. It is in our American rights that we can choose. By signing this petition, you can help primary and secondary students get a better and more stable education.
