Why this petition matters
This petition is to raise awareness around safety after dark in the city of Manchester among people of all ages, especially the student community.
So far this year, there have been almost 9,000 serious crimes such as rape, sexual assault and domestic abuse, say Greater Manchester Police (GMP) - An almost 2% increase from the previous year. There have been 1,312 attempted rapes reported up until summer this year. Now, with the days becoming shorter, people are more vulnerable to such crimes after dark.
The GMP statistics show that nearly 8,000 18 to 24-year olds are a victim of crime in Manchester, a nearly 10% increase over the past years.
We need to be more aware and encourage people to plan their nights out and make sure they come home safe in a city where knife crimes and assaults are becoming more frequent.
Being on the alert to safety could help you, your friends and your family from being the victim of an attack and even possibly losing a loved one.
Please sign this petition - and together everybody can stay #citysafe.
