Pourquoi cette pétition est importante

Hi everyone.

I never thought I'd make a petition about this one day, but I think it's the right time for it. I am a gay Resident Evil fan, and I would like Chris to be officially part of the LGBT community. To explain my real motivations, I'll give some details about how I've lived my life ever since I know I'm gay.

After many years of being a Resident Evil fan, and more specifically, a Chris Redfiled fan and Nivanfield shipper, I'd like to finally be able to defend myself from homophobic comments and reactions from people (from the community and other gamers) and ask Capcom to officially make Chris part of the LGBT community.

Chris Redfield has become a gay idol to a lot of fans over the years. Became very popular amoung the community, who've been imagining him as being gay, probably due to his overly sexy outfits in the games and the fact he was never involved with a woman in any of the games. It made some of us feel connected to the character a little more than  the others. A character that I personally always imagined as bisexual more than being entirely gay, but mostly due to the fact I always believed Capcom would never take the "risk" of making Chris a complete homosexual, more than bisexual, by fear of homophobic reactions.

Since I was a teenager, I know about a rule that says every character is completely straight until the contrary's proved or confirmed by those who've built that fictional character. While gay people have no problem with straight people, some homophobic people do, and that rule gives them power to bash them. To make them feel not normal, more than they already feel. You'd think being gay today is easier than it was before, but it's not really the case. Most of those who think that way aren't even concerned directly by the problem. It's still not easy to be gay.

I grew up watching shows and playing video games with only straight main characters. I realized I was never represented anywhere and as a child that made me think I wasn't normal compared to the rest of the people and that I shouldn't tell anyone about me, ever. I even remember I had promised myself to keep the secret for my entire life when I was young, and kept telling myself I was doing the right thing because it wasn't something people would necessarily need to know. That it's something only I should know. Because I felt it was something bad I shouldn't tell, I was afraid my family would reject me and throw me out of my house like some other parents did with their children. I was afraid that I'd lose all I had in my life. So that pushed me to keep the secret for years until very recently. Thanks to my passion for a fictional character. Thanks to my passion for Chris, and Nivanfield. Which somehow became my exit door.

There's people who say that since this is all fiction, it shouldn't matter because it's not reality and there are more important things to worry about in real life.  They'd try to make all my messages sound like something not necessary just because it wouldn't change anything in the world. But it is reality to me and to a lot of people. Inspiration and motivation fiction (shows, video games) offers has always been very much real for their fans. For either straight or LGBT people.

I've seen very recently on the internet people complaining about the need of LGBT people to be represented in video games, like having at least one character gay, bi or anything that isn't straight wouldn't be normal. But those who complain don't understand how much that means to us. Those people have grown up feeling like normal people, represented by main protagonist and important characters. I would like to change.

As I've been saying to one of my friends, some Devs sees sexuality as a problem, and in their attempt to try to fix it, they give the "homosexuality disability" to the less important character of the story, just to say, "hey gay fan, you're represented in our game, but shush! It's a secret, it's not explicit, we don't want to take any risks and hurt our homophobic fans, we can't make a gay character more important than our straight ones, we just wanted you to know you're represented in the game by the least important character to make you feel better". That's not what we ask for, it won't make us feel better.

There has never really been any kind of confirmation about Chris' sexuality in the franchise, so we could imagine him being bisexual perfectly well without it feeling like something forced.

So I would like Chris, one of the main protagonists of Resident Evil, to be officially part of the LGBT community and represent us, to make real LGBT people happy and represented in an important franchise. This doesn't have to be a change, this can be revelation. Thanks for reading.
