Why this petition matters

On July 5th, 2016, 37 year old Alton Sterling was shot close range while being held down by 2 officers, Howie Lake II and Blane Salamoni. He was selling CDs/DVDs outside of a local shop, which he usually did, according to the shop owner. Days prior, there had been several robberies in the area/various shops, which Alton reacted to by carrying a gun to protect himself/other vendors. An anonymous tip was placed to the Baton Rogue police that there was a man with a gun at the store. Officers arrived onto the scene, held his hands hands behind his back, threw him onto a car, aimed a gun in his face, and screamed at him to put his hands on the car or they would shoot. They then tazed him and demanded he lay on the ground. While holding his hands up, he was tackled to the ground, and as he was pinned down, was shot fatally at close range by officer Salamoni. Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry has not pressed any state charges, and the Department of Justice refused to indict on federal charges. Did Alton deserve a death sentence? Should his killers be free to go where they please, live where they please, do whatever they’d like with their time, just because they could hide behind a badge? We are demanding Jeff Landry & The U.S. Department of Justice to open this case and criminally charge both officers Salamoni & Lake.
