Why this petition matters

Started by Subhan Baig

For the last 3 years, at least 2 million Uighurs have been put into more than 85 internment camps in Xinjiang, China. The Uighur Muslims who were once part of the camps say that they were unlawfully detained, interrogated, and beaten, just because they were Muslims. The United States commission has called it the largest mass incarceration of a minority population in the world today. China claims that they put Uighur Muslims into these internment camps because they are threats to security, such as attacks carried out by Uighur militants in 2013-2014. However, China is taking this to another level, as they are taking innocent adults that have done nothing wrong, away from their families and abusing their human rights.

The Xinjiang government has been abusing Uighur Muslims through torture, illegal surveillance, and not allowing them to practice their religion. In 2017, the Xinjiang government passed a law which prohibited men from growing long beards and women from wearing veils, which are both things that Muslims all around the world regularly do. Additionally, dozens of mosques were destroyed, prohibiting Uighur Muslims to pray at the mosques. At the internment camps, many horrific things have been done to the Uighur Muslims. Many detainees who have fled China described the harsh conditions, claiming that Muslims are forced to renounce Islam and pledge loyalty to the CCP. Others have reported prison-like conditions, with cameras monitoring each of their movies 24/7 and being tortured and subjected to sleep deprivation during interrogations. In the concentration camps, Uighur Muslims are forced to drink alcohol and eat pork, which is prohibited in their religion. Leaked documents have shown that detainees are forced to take pills and are the human subject of organ harvesting and sterilization procedures. Women have shared sexual abuse stories, such as getting raped and getting forced to undergo abortions. The children are sent to orphanages and are constantly bullied for their religion by the other there, and multiple videos have surfaced online of them getting beat harshly. The inhuman treatment also exists outside of the camps, as Uighur Muslims are forced to install an app that tracks their movement so the Xinjiang government can monitor their activity. Additionally, Muslims are not allowed to speak any foreign language and no halal food is allowed in the households.

As a rising senior in high school that is Muslim, I came across many stories on social media that motivated me to start this petition. We youth are the future, and we are able to use our power to stop human rights violations like what is happening in China right now. With enough collective action and global pressure, we can persuade the Chinese government and other governments around the world to account for the Uighur Muslims targeted. Join me by signing this petition and using your voice against injustice and human rights abuse.
