Why this petition matters

Started by Jean Jacques Koffi

Muzingaye Matthew Thaka is a young  Zimbabwean in his early twenties  and student at the AFRICAN LEADERSHIP UNIVERSITY IN RWANDA that found it fit to express his displeasure with the recent arrest of the two journalists that had set out to expose corruption schemes in Zimbabwe. He did so without harming or discriminating any individual, group, or organization. In light of the current restrictions, he staged a one-man protest in the city of BULAWAYO in Zimbabwe that was simply aimed at highlighting his displeasure. He was arrested and charged with Inciting Violence.

Thaka’s was not violent or a threat to the interests of national security or public safety. Nor was his action necessarily civil disobedience, because his act did not involve violating the laws of the state. Protests, even campaigns of nonviolent resistance, or civil resistance, can often have the character (in addition to using nonviolent methods) of positively supporting a democratic and constitutional order. Thaka was well within the law, why arrest him?

We demand that the Zimbabwean Police immediately release Muzingaye and all the charges against him dropped. We demand Justice and freedom for our friend and brother Muzi.
