Tell Cochrane City Council to Save Polar Bears

With 65% of the world's polar bears residing in Canada it makes sense that Cochrane, in northern Ontario is home to The Canadian Polar Bear Habitat.  This is a one of a kind, world renowned research and education facility.  This centre is the only human care establishment dedicated solely to caring for polar bears who cannot survive in the wild. Injured bears and those born into captivity live full lives in a 7 hectare pristine, sub arctic, natural environment.

In the past the CPBH has been funded by the town of Cochrane along with private donations led by the charitable organization - Friends for the Canadian Polar Bear Habitat.  The “Friends” hope to ease the financial burden on the town of Cochrane by generating additional funding from donors and applying for Federal and Provincial grants.  In November, Cochrane city council, led by several newly elected members, fired the senior conservation coordinator from CPBH without explanation.  This severely impacts the charity's ability to generate funds from donors and grants from Provincial and Federal  governments.  This money is needed to provide proper care for the bears and continue the research and education that unites and inspires people to learn more about polar bears, their care and conservation.

The bears don’t have time to wait for politicians to do the right thing, they need your help now.  Climate change and the loss of sea ice habitat has made their situation dire and the scientific research that CPBH has pioneered is important to improve conservation efforts for this iconic animal.

Tell Cochrane city council to stop playing politics and do the right thing.  Hire back the conservation coordinator, resume communication with Friends of the Canadian Polar Bear Habitat and do not consider turning the facility into a roadside zoo and snowmobile museum, as some council members have suggested.
