Why this petition matters

Started by Kate Little

The world is currently in a climate crisis. Carbon levels in the atmosphere are at an all-time high, wetlands and rainforests are depleting, droughts continue to ransack once lush and green regions, mass extinction is happening at monumental rates, forests are being chopped to stumps, sea levels are rising – the list goes on. According to the UN, we need to bring down greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030. One source of emissions is the production and transportation of plastic.

Have you ever gone to the grocery store and wondered why everything is wrapped in plastic, vacuum-sealed in a package, plated on limp Styrofoam or bagged in plastic mesh when it's naturally covered in a protective peel? If you haven’t, think about it. Why are cucumbers tightly sealed in plastic sheaths and peppers come in a thin plastic bag of three when they can easily be sold without the shiny, fossil fuel emitting exterior? So, what if we ban all single-use plastic packaging in grocery stores? Grocers should encourage customers to bring their own Tupperware and produce bags on their weekly grocery runs! This change will not only reduce waste but create sustainable practices – which together help to fight against climate change as our collective carbon footprint shrinks.

WE the undersigned residents of Quebec call upon the province's Minister of the Environment and the Fight against Climate Change, Benoit Charette, to ban all single-use plastic packaging from our local grocers. Many already have the habit to bring large reusable bags to transport all their groceries in, so reusable bags for produce and Tupperware should not be a challenge.

This change may be small but offering single-use plastic packaging in grocery stores is beyond negligent – especially when the actions necessary to combat the world’s climate crisis are so clear. Make the sustainable change today and ban single-use plastic packaging at your local grocer. Please sign below.
