Why this petition matters

Thousands of kids were forcibly separated from their parents at the border under President Trump's immigration policy. While the administration's policies continue to shift, Microsoft has come under fire for a contract and partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) worth more than $19 million.

Countless Microsoft employees have started speaking out about this contract, which pushed Microsoft to issue a statement condemning ICE's and the Trump administration's policy of separating kids from their family at the border. But why would Microsoft want to do future business with ICE, especially under an administration that has indicated little compassion toward innocent kids crossing the border?

Tell Microsoft that $19 million isn't worth partnering with an agency that ripped kids away from their parents, and shrugged their shoulders as audio recording captured children wailing after being separated from their families.

Earlier this year, Google dropped a partnership and contract with The Pentagon over controversial artificial intelligence work that many Google employees worried could be used by the government to harm people. And while Microsoft says that their relationship with ICE -- which revolves around their Azure Cloud Service -- may not be in use at the border, they haven't definitively said how ICE is using their products.

It is time for tech companies that enable and help institutions violate common human rights standards to take a stand. One way Microsoft can do that: wind down this partnership with ICE, and refuse future partnerships with ICE.

#FamiliesBelongTogether, and it's up to everyone, including businesses that have contracts with government agencies like ICE, to make sure human rights standards are followed, and that no more kids have to be forcibly separated from their parents and families.
