Change the Indians Name.
Change the Indians Name.
Why this petition matters
Hanover High School has held the Indian name in shame for far too long. This name is directly connected to the Native American land that was violently stolen for development in Hanover.
Hanover Public Schools has continued this disrespect and injustice by refusing the change the name. Keeping the name is a complete disservice to the Native Americans, and is completely neglecting the bloody history behind the name and symbol.
The unjust murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many others have brought the focus back to the extreme racial injustices in America. Hanover can now stand behind this movement and distance itself from a racist name. We are calling the Hanover School Committee to stand behind people of color and support immediate change. While the current Black Lives Matter movement continues, Hanover has the opportunity to identify other racial biases as well.
As those who seek equal human rights march through our cities, share petitions, and donate to worthy causes, Hanover can take part through changing its mascot. The unjust bloodshed caused by the colonizers should not be part of our school community. Now is the time to change it once and for all.
This petition is calling the Hanover School Committee and Superintendent Matthew Ferron to immediately change this name for what is right and just. Although there is a history with this mascot and possible personal connections, these are not reasons to keep the name and appease those with no regard for the racial injustices in our country or those contributing to it.
