Why this petition matters

Started by Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, The King Center

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, an Black man, died in Minneapolis, Minnesota while handcuffed and lying face down on the street during an arrest. Minneapolis Police Officer, Derek Chauvin, kept his knee on George Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. Three fellow officers involved in the arrest aided in detaining George Floyd and watched George Floyd struggle to stay alive. George Floyd begged for help “I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!” Despite his pleas, no officer helped him. A crowd of people watched and videotaped. After almost 6 minutes, Mr. Floyd became unresponsive and the officer continued to choke him for another 2 minutes and 53 seconds. Video shows people begging the officers to stop the brutal actions that were killing George Floyd.

George Floyd died moments later.

All four Minneapolis police officers were fired, however, all four ex-officers involved in the murder of George Floyd have not been arrested and charged. To date, only one ex-officer, Derek Chauvin, has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. The three other ex-officers involved in the fatal arrest are Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas K. Lane. These three men still have not been officially charged and arrested for their involvement in the murder of George Floyd!  The video is clear. Four Minneapolis police officers were complicit in the murder of George Floyd.

  1. We are calling for the other three ex-police officers, Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas K. Lane, to be arrested immediately and prosecuted for murder to the full extent of the law. These three men must also be held accountable for murder.
  2. We are demanding the Federal Bureau of Investigation open a formal case to prosecute the four men for violating the civil rights of George Floyd.
  3. We are demanding that city, state, and federal legislators resurrect and support the passage of H.R. 4408 - Eric Garner Excessive Use of Force Prevention Act of 2019-2020 to ban the Chokehold and/or the application of any pressure to the throat or windpipe, which may prevent or hinder breathing or reduce intake of air. The Chokehold must not be used against citizens detained for questioning and/or during arrests.
