Why this petition matters

Suzanne Hadley SHOULD NOT represent Manhattan Beach as mayor. With the issues of Covid-19 and racial equality still in the forefront, Ms. Hadley has shown she can not lead MB into a peaceful and united future.
“All lives matter, not just COVID lives” is a remark made by Suzanne Hadley at the September 1, 2020 Manhattan Beach City Council meeting. In one sound bite, she dismisses Covid-19 using a racist retort. Is this someone we want representing Manhattan Beach as Mayor?

In the infamous interview on the pier with Tracey Taylor London on June 30, 2020, Hadley says, "This is not the plague. I don't know anyone who has died of COVID. Maybe you do.” She continues in another segment, “We can prevent drunk driving by banning alcohol, we can prevent car fatalities on the highway by closing our highways or preventing cars. The role of society is not to prevent death."
This was broadcast on NBC and tweeted widely.

Mayor Richard Montgomery tweeted at the time, "The comment Mayor Pro Tem Suzanne Hadley made on MSNBC today is NOT a reflection of how I feel as Mayor of Manhattan Beach, nor does it reflect how the entire City Council feels on this subject. We are in the middle of a serious pandemic and are taking precautions to protect our communities health. The beach closure was NOT in Manhattan Beach's control, but we stand by the decision LA County Dept of Public Health made to prevent large gatherings and further increasing the spread of COVID-19."

The mayor later amended that Ms. Hadley was speaking as an individual. However, this was not made clear during the interview, and the perception was that the town of Manhattan Beach held these marginal beliefs. Ms. Hadley was only approached because she was filling in for the mayor at the time. What will she say as mayor? Will she continue to claim that she is speaking as an individual whenever she says and does anything controversial? It’s kinda hard to separate yourself from your office when speaking in public, isn’t it?

On June 11, 2020 regarding opening the pier, “I would say it’s not defiant,” she said. I would say doors are open and unlocked, all we need to do is walk out of the cell. The jailers are gone. It’s so old news after the protests of the last 10 days, which have been powerful and effective and I have attended and I have worn a mask and I have been uncomfortable in some spaces… but it is literally a joke that people cannot be outside now and we’ll have to worry about social distancing after what we’ve seen the last 10 days.”

Suzanne Hadley alone was opposed to any action to help heal the wounds left by the eminent domain seizure of the Bruce family’s thriving resort at the behest of the Ku Klux Klan in 1920. Because of national racial injustice protests, our own racist history has been a big issue in our town. During the August 18, 2020 MB City Council meeting, the mayor pro tem made a case against doing anything further to make amends or encourage diversity. Ms. Hadley’s was the lone voice among the council members, commenters, and speakers that evening. This prompted an observer to create a petition demanding her resignation.

This illustrates how Suzanne Hadley ignores council presentations, the heartfelt comments of her fellow council members, civil discontent, as well as common sense, in order to follow a strictly conservative agenda in a nonpartisan position.

Please sign this petition to keep Manhattan Beach moderate and out of the news.
