Why this petition matters

Started by Griffin Frigaard

Hello good people and thank you so much for coming to this petition, we will need as many signatures as we can get to change anything!

The goal of this petition is to raise awareness to timberline and their associates that the people do not agree with their recent decisions on summer skiing/snowboarding. Everyone who signs this petition agrees that they want timberline to let HCSC, MHSSC & WINDELLS remain in control of their own terrain parks, to abolish the idea of the “Pro Park” & to restore the “Public Park” to keep summer skiing/snowboarding available to the people.

One June 19th, 2018 Timberline Lodge introduced the “Timberline Pro Park”, in addition to the Public Park to “accommodate for pro / advanced snowboarders & skiers”.  At first there was controversy about whether this was an improvement to Mt Hood summers or not; some people were excited to have a rope tow accessible park that is available to the public for an additional $29, similar to what the private camps like Windells, Mt. Hood Summer Ski Camps & High Cascade have had since the 1980’s & 1990’s. Others were upset about the higher ticket prices and wondered if this meant the end of the usual “Public Park”.

Within 4 days of the summer operations, timberline freestyle announced that they hand purchased 5 new rails for the “Pro Park” and that’s when the overall consensus changed. People were excited to see new rails for the parks, but when everyone realized that they couldn’t ride them unless they paid extra every day, that’s when the people started to speak up. Everyone, from locals & employees to the migrant summer crowds were angry about feeling excluded from summer riding, & that the main result of this plan was the public park becoming a low priority for the staff.

Summer operations at timberline date back to 1979, and for over 20 years summer snowboarding on mount hood has been both a public and a private option. However, now that is all about to change. UNLESS we as the people who all collectively own the national forest stands up and fights. It is rumored that Timberline Lodge has decided to take over the maintenance and planning of all summer terrain parks, as well as pulling the plug on the public park! This will monopolize the entire summer terrain park experience. Not only will it mean that if you want to enter a terrain park you will have to pay extra, but it will also kill all the originality and uniqueness that the camps offered by hiring private employees.

Some might say this is a money grab scheme. Giving a false sense of exclusiveness to anyone willing to pay the extra money, meant to take away the public option, forcing hundreds of locals & migrants who already have summer passes ($999 MSRP) to pay an extra 29$ a day. Some might say this is just an evolution of summer riding. But to give some perspective, if a person was to ride the “Pro Park” every day of the summer, they would spend $999 for a summer pass + $29 daily for terrain park access, which comes out to an extra $2668. ($3667.00 TOTAL)  that means that if things keep going this way, the “Pro Park” will become the “Public Park” and terrain park access will cost more than double the current rate for a summer pass.

That is what the people are up against if this plan goes forward. A future of ticket prices skyrocketing faster than ever before, until the prices to enjoy summer skiing / snowboarding are higher than the average income that the community can generate. If that happens we could see the end of Mt. Hood summer skiing as we know it. If you believe that control over the camps terrain parks should remain in the hands of the camps instead of being taken over by timberline, if you believe timberline should keep a public terrain park option & you believe since this is national forest land we the people should have the right to speak out against this plan, please sign this petition.

Thank you.
