Include Cephalopods in the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill
Include Cephalopods in the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill
Why this petition matters
The Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill does not currently recognise cephalopods ( octopus, squid, cuttlefish, or crustaceans (crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp) as sentient animals that can feel pain, and deserve protection from suffering.
There is no logical reason why these animals should not be included in the bill, given the large body of scientific evidence available that these animals are, at the very least, capable of feeling pain, fear, stress and pleasure.
We know that octopuses in particular are highly intelligent, they can use tools, recognise faces and solve puzzles. They have even been observed engaging in play!
Without inclusion in the bill, cephalopods and crustaceans won't have the protection against cruelty and mistreatment that these wonderful animals deserve.
Other countries such as Austria, Norway and Sweden recognise the sentience of cephalopods and crustaceans, and the UK can not claim to be a leader in animal welfare while deliberately excluding them from the sentience bill.
Sign this petition to send a message to the government that all animals deserve protection from mistreatment!
