Why this petition matters

Started by Hands Off Finchley Central

Transport for London plans to build hundreds of new homes jammed into high-rise and large linear blocks, packed in and around Finchley Central Station. The proposed units will be small 1 or 2-bedroom flats and up to 27 storeys high, so not suitable for growing families. These 7, 15 and 27 storey buildings will be totally out of character with the local area. This will have an unacceptably harmful impact on our surroundings, overwhelm local services and remove all existing station parking. The integrity and character of Finchley Central is under threat.

TfL's primary development objective is to maximise the economic value of their 'disposal' site and maximise the number of units delivered. This blunt response to the housing crisis doesn't accord with the London Mayor’s call for 'Good Growth' in London, which he defines as "Not growth that leaves Londoners feeling left out, not growth that obliterates local character in the name of regeneration and not growth that undermines community cohesion”.

They claim that this is an ‘important opportunity to deliver affordable high-quality homes’ but ‘design-led quality developmentcannot be achieved given the density proposed without creating an unacceptably harmful impact on the surroundings.

As with a number of similar station redevelopments, this is an attempt to plug Mayor Khan’s funding gap of TfL, showing his total lack of understanding of London suburbs and the people that live in them.
