Pass Bill 1867 - granting legal permanent residents voting rights in NYC local elections
Why this petition matters
Without immigrants New York City wouldn’t have its flavor! We contribute to the culture, we contribute to the city’s commerce, so we deserve the right to vote for politicians who determine how our tax dollars are spent locally; and create laws that impact the daily experiences within the communities we live in. Bill 1867 (Int. No. 1867), a local law to amend the New York City Charter, would allow lawful permanent residents in New York City to vote in municipal elections. This petition is a call to action.
Legal Permanent Residents (green card holders) dutifully pay taxes and can provide monetary support to political campaigns but continue to be denied suffrage.
US citizenship isn’t granted automatically after gaining your residency. Some adult green card holders must wait 3 - 5 YEARS before applying for citizenship which involves paying a $725 fee and passing a civics test. By design, citizenship is out of reach for many legal permanent residents.
These current policies disenfranchise tax paying, law abiding community members.New York City Council must pass Bill 1867 which grants green card holders the right to vote in local elections so our immigrant communities can be politically empowered while on the pathway to naturalization.
