Cancel the Silvertown Tunnel
Cancel the Silvertown Tunnel
Why this petition matters
London doesn't need more mega-roads. The Silvertown Tunnel will spew lorries and other HGVs into some of the poorest and most polluted areas of East and South-East London.
Now more than 50 climate scientists and transport experts have issued an open letter to Sadiq Khan calling on him to ditch the tunnel because it will make it harder to meet the UK's climate goals.
Not only will this £2.2 billion road expansion project hinder efforts to meet London's climate change targets, it will be a blight on poor communities for decades to come.
Local people are against it, doctors and health workers are against it, local MPs are against it, young people from black and ethnic communities are against it, climate scientists are against it.
The Mayor of London and the Greater London Assembly must cancel this misconceived project before it's too late for our planet and the people who live near it.
The Silvertown road tunnel will run alongside the Blackwall tunnel in Greenwich under the river to Newham in North East London. It will take juggernauts much larger than the current Blackwall tunnel but there will still be no provision for cyclists or cargo bikes to cross the river in East London. Both the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels will be tolled.
Newham and Greenwich peninsula already have terrible air quality and adding mega trucks to the through traffic can only make matters worse.
