Why this petition matters

Started by Layla Cooke

BSL (British sign language ) should be taught in primary schools as part of the Curriculum.  There are an estimated 7147 French people live in Scotland and 350,000 deaf people.

In a world where we adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of the ever changing world why is it we learn German and French in school and not something as useful as BSL?

It's not only people who are deaf who use BSL. People who have non verbal communication also rely on this important language.

Hearing loss affects more than 10 million people in the UK. By 2031 this will have increased to 14.5 million

Every year in the UK 840 babies are born deaf, meaning around 1 in 1,000 or 60 children are born with a severe to profound hearing loss

As a student who was discriminated against and not able to partake in lessons, I know how important inclusiveness is. I developed anxiety too. it is estimated that 40% of deaf and hard of hearing people experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives (that is over 3 million people)

I ask you all for help to encourage this vital language help not only to help BSL users feel included but to refuse mental health too
