Avoid replacing functional devices due to bad batteries
Avoid replacing functional devices due to bad batteries
Why this petition matters
Within the last years, more and more devices, gadgets and computers, which lag the possibility for customers to exchange batteries on their own, have entered the market. Batteries have a limited lifespan and with regular use, they need to be replaced often after two years.
Without the ability to user-replace the batteries and with replacement fees as high as the costs of new devices, the end of the battery life marks the obsolescence of the device itself, even if all other parts are still in perfect condition.
This regulation will encourage companies to design their devices in a way that batteries can be easily exchanged, either by the user itself or the manufacturer for a small fee and will extend the lifetime of their products. It will limit waste and the use of resources.
The European Parliament shall pass a law limiting the costs of battery replacements by the original manufacturer to 10% of the original selling price or ideally enforce user replaceable batteries. The costs of the replacement battery shall not exceed prices of batteries of similar capacity and technology.
