Cervical Cancer is an almost 100% preventable disease caused by the HPV virus. Nearly all of us (>80%) will be exposed to HPV in our lifetime.

Australia has announced that they are close to eliminating cervical cancer.  Rwanda succeeded in immunizing 93% of their adolescents against HPV within 3 years.

Cervical Cancer and a variety of other cancers are caused by the HPV virus and can be eradicated by:

1) Vaccination against HPV for boys and girls from age 9 onward.  2 shots are necessary for children from age 9 to 15 and 3 shots are needed age 15 onward;

2) Regular cervical cancer screening (Pap testing) starting at age 21 and Pap and HPV testing combined starting at age 30;

3) Improved navigation and quality of follow up after an abnormal Pap; and

4) Access to quality care when a cervical cancer diagnosis is made.

Chicago unfortunately has cervical cancer rates that are 39% above the US average and has a death rate from cervical cancer that is 61% above the national average.
