My partners daughter Ella is 7 years old. She has a rare genetic disorder called ctnb1 gene which stops her from walking full time and has stopped her from talking. The park was a great place to take her to have fun and get outside. She loved the swings! Her reaction to it was beautiful. But now she’s become too tall for the baby swings her legs scrap the floor and she can’t go on the normal swings as she needs to be safe and secure. 

That’s why I’m calling on the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, to write to local authorities to ensure parks are available for those disabilities. And I’m calling on my council in Manchester to make our playgrounds disabled friendly.

I would love to see parks designed for special needs children & young adults with developmental delay. Wheelchair swings and roundabouts, ramps, sensory gardens, sensory equipment, splash area, picnic tables that are wheelchair friendly and changing areas designed not only for babies but older children too. 

Parents of disabled children face enough challenges in society physically and emotionally. All we want is to see our children happy. A park designed with special needs in mind would mean the world to us. This has happened in Berkshire and has a been a big success - it can happen all across the UK too. 

Every child should have the right to have a good time in a park like every other child does. And, this also helps other children learn about disabilities too.
