For Black History Month, Black Women's March started a social media campaign: BLACK WOMEN IN HISTORY.

Our research yielded over 200 names of trailblazing, groundbreaking, history-changing Black Women in the U.S. After a hard selection process––as every figure was as worthy as the next––we ultimately published over 170 outstanding Black women across a range of disciplines: medicine, business, finance, literature, politics, STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), education, art, music, sports, dance, theatre, film, entertainment, law, social activism, and beyond.

Deplorably, a majority of these women don’t exist in the NYC Public School curriculum, which reveals not only a problematic lack of representation, but a gross whitewashing of history. As Marian Wright Edelman wrote, “it’s hard to be what you can’t see” and currently, there are little to NO Black Women in the public education students K-12 receive.

Sign this petition to demand NYC Public Schools and City Council move to introduce these women into NYC’s Public School Curriculum. 

From the first––and to this day, only––woman to have won the Pulitzer prize for drama twice, to the first woman to found and become a bank president in America, all these women are essential to a fully informed, fair, inclusive, and, most importantly, ACCURATE education.
