We see individual stroke play events every week on the professional tours around the world. The Olympics should be a competition that highlights national unity.

There is already ample precedence of how to organize team events, and as we've seen in competitions like the Ryder Cup how enjoyable this can be for the fans and players alike. It's also a rare opportunity to pair national pride with a traditionally individual sport.

I grew up playing competitive junior golf as well as high school golf. Though the individual tournaments were far more prestigious, the team play aspect of high school/college golf or the rare event where we were teamed with other players from our area - we had an event called the Junior Ryder Cup, where golfers from New England went against a team of players from Florida - always elicited more camaraderie and passion because you were playing not only for yourself but for your team and your teammates. With the success of the Ryder and President's Cups, respectively, I think this is an excellent occasion to put the best golfers in the world on display in a thrilling, made for TV competition that highlights the sport as the global sport that it has become in the last few decades.
