I would like to see garden centres and plant nurseries re-opened not just for the good of the businesses but for the wellbeing of anyone with outdoor space.  It is generally acknowledged that growing and nurturing plants lifts our spirits, keep us in touch with the natural world, brings us beauty and joy and allow us to think of a better future.  People who have never grown vegetables are overwhelming seed merchants with orders and they need the help and inspiration that nurseries and garden centres offer as well as all the other things that gardeners need like watering cans and compost.  Builders' merchants are still open and in France garden centres are open with strict distancing in place.  After all, we are a country renowned for our love of gardens and gardening so please let's open the nurseries and garden centres and prevent the new season's plants being turned into compost.
