Why this petition matters

Started by Capitol Hill Pride

Seattle's Capitol Hill Pride to request East Precinct as a Community Center.

Capitol Hill Pride is advocating the re-structure of the East Precinct into a community center run by a consortium of non-profit organizations.
In the city's commitment to supporting minority communities and divesting from police we believe a community center with outreach and services especially for youth would be ideal and benefit the public but also in the long run the police department by assisting in support services.
Close to a historical location, the East Precinct is just several blocks from where a young baby by the name of Barack Obama in his first year grew up while his mother attended the University of Washington. Capitol Hill and this district have long been a diverse community with famous artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Lee and Kurt Cobain and continues to be a strong center of marches, rallies and demonstrations for civil rights.
In remembering George Floyd and those that have lost their lives due to police violence we ask Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and the City of Seattle to consider the East Precinct be restructured as a safe protected place for community use.
