Why this petition matters

Started by Livable Ventura

Have you ever seen a new building go up in your neighborhood and wonder why you weren't notified? When new developments are proposed, our city is only required to notify home owners within 300 feet of the new development via a mailed postcard. 300 feet is approximately 120 steps or 1 block. Currently, renters and businesses are excluded and do not receive notices by mail.

Larger developments should have a broader notification range as they have a  significant impact on our community. The code (Sec. 24.560.040. - Method of notice) which only requires a 300 ft. notification boundary was written as notification for the building of single family residences, not for large developments.

Given the recent rapid development in Ventura, it's time for our leaders to take a more active role in increasing transparency in the planning review process. Residents' opinions and concerns are being disregarded as developers are being granted an abundance of warrants and exceptions. We want our leaders to value and consider citizen input when making decisions about new developments. This petition will help to ensure that ALL citizens are well informed about major changes in their communities.

By signing this petition, you are requesting that the city:

1) Expand the notification boundary to 1 mile for any development including 25 or more units.

2) Request that the city include renters and business owners within the notification boundary.

3) In addition to posting in the newspaper, post notices on one or more social media platforms to increase transparency.
