In Augusta GA in 2021, there is an “expressway” that honors the slave owner John C. Calhoun. It is well documented that Calhoun, from South Carolina, considered blacks to be the “inferior race” and adamantly pushed the slavery agenda as a “necessary evil”. Black men in Augusta are being targeted and searched under the same “necessary evil” mindset. 
If this street name is not changed, the systematic ill-thinking and racial profiling and harassment will continue. This is a consistent slap in the face to every resident anywhere. Martin Luther King jr. Said an injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere. 
There are 3-year-old articles that exist where the name change is “in the works” and now it’s time for it to actually work.

This is a petition to change the name from John C. Calhoun expressway to Thomas W. Burroughs Expressway.

Thomas W. Burroughs was a black man who lived in Augusta and died at 100 years old. He picked cotton for J.P. King Manufacturing, and as an employee for the company, he labored to lay the bricks on the original Laney Walker Blvd. BRICK road, and achieved 56 years of loyalty. He also labored to erect the Bell Auditorium. He was married to the same woman for 75 + years, Nancy Burroughs, who made an indelible career encouraging troubled youth at YDC (Youth Development Center). Thomas W.
