Why this petition matters

Started by Matt Scime

Its time for radical change and inclusion. This has been a long time coming and we can't stop now. Removing statues is one step, but the next step is to analyze the structure of society at a deeper level. We have been living our years and months named after some of the most racist people in history. We can not fully decolonize our mind and our thinking until we address this.

July: Named after Julius Caesar, who once sold the entire population of a conquered region in Gaul, no fewer than 53,000 people, to slave dealers on the spot.Within the empire, slaves were sold at public auction or sometimes in shops, or by private sale in the case of more valuable slaves.

August: Named After Emperor Augusts, who oversaw some of the most horrific acts of slavery in the world. Slaves were considered property under Roman law and had no legal personhood. Most slaves would never be freed. Unlike Roman citizens, they could be subjected to corporal punishment, sexual exploitation (prostitutes were often slaves), torture and summary execution.

We have been living with and defining our lives under these months named after two of the most oppressive men in history. If this receives enough signatures, we will vote on more inclusive names for our months, and eventually rename the whole calendar year to further our decolonization.
