Why this petition matters

Started by Wildfire Safe Bolinas

We the undersigned are in agreement with, and in support of, Bolinas Eucalyptus Project and their plans to remove heavy fire fuels in and around Bolinas.

We understand this will include the staged removal of several large stands of Eucalyptus trees including but not limited to the the big trees along Mesa and Olema Bolinas roads, the the top of Terrace at Marin Way and many of the sick and dying smaller trees on the BCPUD land from Mesa Road toward and behind Resource Recovery.

We understand this work will at times be disruptive to traffic flow, there will be noise, dust, and increased truck traffic as these operations occur.

We are assured Bolinas Eucalyptus Project will put great emphasis on re-vegetation and restoration with native grasses, shrubs and trees. Native plant experts and local environmental experts will be used to oversee site rehabilitation. Stumps will be cut low, covered and buried with mulch to lessen the stark recently cut look that can occur with such projects.

We urge the County of Marin, Bolinas Fire Department, BCPUD and PG&E to work with Bolinas Eucalyptus Project to make these projects happen in a time frame that acknowledges the the urgency we face as wildfire danger increases with each passing season.

Bolinas Eucalyptus Project has been and will continue to work with arborists, foresters, biologists, and wildfire experts to maximize safety benefits while avoiding adverse environmental impacts.

We understand that these projects are part of what needs to be a multifaceted wild fire threat mitigation strategy. We all recognize that every citizen must closely look at the property on which they live with an eye for creating defensible space. The most important work to be done is the first five feet from our homes, then thirty feet and then one hundred feet. There are many layers to wildfire protection, including "hardening" of house structures, but there are no magic bullets. The key is to utilize as many mitigation strategies as possible.
