Why this petition matters

Started by Joseph Wallis

Microsoft has announced that they will work with Harman Kardon to send a firmware update to all online Invoke speakers to disable Cortana and leave only Bluetooth functionality.  Owners did not buy this speaker for simple Bluetooth functionality and do not want the smart assistant or wifi capability disabled in the speaker. Once disabled, owners will not be able to use wifi enabled technology like Spotify Connect or play music independently from a Bluetooth connected device.

We wish for Microsoft and Harman Kardon to migrate the speakers with the wifi enabled an an alternate assistant.  Harman Kardon makes many other speakers with Alexa and Google Assistant functionality, such as the Harman Kardon Allure Alexa speaker, most likely with similar hardware inside as the Invoke.  Since Microsoft is no longer competing in the consumer assistant space this is not a conflict of interest to them to promote an alternate assistant from another company.  Cortana today can already invoke Alexa as a skill.  Making Alexa the primary assistant would simply remove an extra layer and grant users with an even wider range of functionality than they have today with Cortana.

Giving users a $50 gift card for their troubles is not acceptable for a device that is only a few years old.  The Invoke is a superbly engineered piece of hardware that will be crippled if the planned firmware update goes through.  We the signed urge Microsoft and Harman Kardon to do the right thing and maintain the level of quality and functionality that buyers expect from their purchase.
