Why this petition matters

Started by Katrina Leibee

Right now the criminalization of sex work puts those that want and need to sell sex at risk. Sex work is real work, and it deserves to be professionalized in order to protect sex workers from abuse and exploitation. Sex work is not the same as sex trafficking, and those that choose this line of work deserve the same protections and benefits as anyone else. Prostitutes cannot report when they are abused, they often have to work through pimp houses and unsafe organizations, and they are treated like commodities rather than people. Sex workers can be the people we see every day. Right now, at my college campus, there are sex workers that have no support and no resources should they need it. We all, together, need to end the stigma around sex work, legalize sex work, and end sex trafficking. The ability to choose your own employment and have that choice protected is a great privilege. It is a privilege that should not just be reserved for the jobs politicians deem "legitimate." As a female, I want to make sure that every woman, every person, has their choice of what to do with their body protected. Sex work is real work, and it deserves real respect. Each state has the ability to choose if sex work is legal, and I highly encourage Colorado and its representative to choose to protect sex workers and keep them safe.
