Why this petition matters

Started by Rachel Baumrin

Hi I am a year round resident of Martha’s Vineyard I live in West Tisbury and own a business in Vineyard Haven. I ask that the SSA take into consideration the needs of island residents and their continued need to commute off island regularly for many different reasons. I think that the SSA could offer a residents only commuter boat That ran at 7:30 am and returns late like 8:30/ 9 something like that. No reservation necessary but first come first serve or be able to book an hour before departure. If the boat isn’t full then it can be filled with standby or freight or other reservations. The fact that we have to decide if leaving the island anytime between June and September is worth it, is ridiculous. Residents should have the first opportunity to leave and come back. The SSA’s motto used to be, or perhaps still is, “lifeline to the islands” if that is what the company stands for then why is there so much aggravation and stress Involved in booking a reservation. I noticed while writing to you that the motto under the logo now says “serving the islands, and you” also a bit of an exaggeration since the service has been far from consistent. While it is great to have tourists visiting our beautiful islands enjoying our hotels, eating in our restaurants and shopping in our stores, to what cost. When a resident has to struggle to get to a doctors appointment because it’s summer, or a parent can’t get their kids to sleep away camp or the museum or get to visit a beloved relative somewhere because it’s summer then it would seem that the SSA has lost their way in what there purpose initially was. The rates keep going up and the quality of the service is going down. Millions are being spent on office buildings and terminals but there is still only one check in booth in woods hole. It would just seem that the whole system is in need of some serious review. I look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks.
