Why this petition matters

I am not doing this just for myself. I pray, as a survivor of domestic violence and abuse, that it will be implemented in my lifetime, but I am demanding this for the victims that continue to suffer in silence, all too aware that our justice system has failed us.

Aware that the existing laws do not adequately protect victims and make it near impossible to transition into survivors and advocates.

This country NEEDS to support and lobby for the legislative enforcement of GPS tracking bracelets, a corresponding Victim App Alert and MANDATORY rehabilitative counselling to abusers, as a condition of the report and/or their bail.

This is being implemented in the US (Maryland to be exact, as the first line of defence for victims of domestic violence) and allows for an alert to be sent to the victim when there is a breach at 5000 feet. The police is then alerted when the P.O is breached at 2,500 feet, unlike the 50 to 150 feet/meters our existing Protection Orders offers victims.

I ask that you see and support the cause behind The ABA Movement..ABA means All for Bracelet Alerts.

This can and will save lives.

Our P.O leaves victims in fear and armed only with the "consolation" that we will see or hear our attacker before he/she sees us. Hopeful that we will get enough time to then alert the police. This has not proven adequate for many victims, who were murdered at the hands of their estranged spouses or former significant others.

The existing Protection Order is not only difficult and frustrating to secure, it, on its own is viewed with disdain by abusers and referred to as "ah piece of paper". The magistrates know this, I believe the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service knows this and most certainly the families of those who were attacked or killed knows this.

It is past the time to continue to lobby for amended legislation that offers no tangible protection. The first week in January 2020 was ushered in with the deaths of three women who were killed at the hands of their estranged spouses. Less than a week later another woman was stalked and shot dead by her spouse. She had a Protection Order and so did countless others before her. Let us not make their deaths go in vain/

What of MANDATORY assessment and counseling for abusers?

How can we expect to treat with ending the cycle of abuse, if we don't address the issue of the mindset of the abuser? Why is this not mandatory at or following the application or granting of every application for a P.O? Can this not assist the courts in its determination of just how much danger the victims and their families can be at risk of?

Why is it that the only persons told to seek counseling are the victims?

Trinidad and Tobago NEEDS this. We NEED to see how far reaching domestic violence. gender based violence and abuse is and how it continues to destroy the very fabric of families.

If we do nothing, then we can surely expect the vicious cycle to continue. Please be mindful that abused children, often grow into abusive adults and too many times we forget the element of emotional and psychological abuse left in the wake of a history of abuse and domestic violence related murders.

Support The ABA Movement and support saving lives!!
