Every year millions of birds migrate through New York, a large portion of them never finish their journey. New York City is a highly developed area, and as a result, it is filled with glass skyscrapers and glass storefronts. Unfortunately, birds cannot see glass, and as a result, New York is the 7th most deadly city in the US for birds. The birds that hit windows often die, and those that do survive the collision often die of fatal injuries days later.

There are multiple solutions to this problem, and all of them are reasonable and achievable. The first is to lower the number of lights in areas like Midtown and Bryant Park. Bryant Park often attracts many birds due to the fact that it has multiple spotlights pointed at it. As a result, it attracts many birds, who then collide into the windows of nearby buildings. Another solution is to require new buildings use bird-friendly windows and make them incorporate bird-friendly design. That way no new buildings will kill birds. The third solution is to require buildings that have killed a high number of birds use bird-friendly windows when they renovate. This last solution may seem impractical, but it has been done before. The Javits Center used to be an incredibly dangerous location for birds, that is until the Center was renovated and had its old windows replaced with bird-friendly ones. Now the Javits Center rarely ever kills birds. The idea of shutting off lights is not that difficult either. After people noticed that the 9/11 tribute lights were trapping migrating birds, the memorial was forced to shut off the lights every time that the number of birds trapped in the beam reached a specific number. These solutions will be most effective if they are implemented together. If they are implemented, the birds of New York will have a much brighter future.
