Keep Austin Building Safely During Covid-19 Shelter In Place Order
Why this petition matters
Austin's construction industry contributes billions of dollars annually to the local economy through the incredibly hard work of its approximately 80,000 construction workers. Both these workers and the buildings they create are an extremely essential part of our local economy and its economic security.
Mayor Steve Adler has put the lively hood of tens of thousands of these construction workers at risk with the Shelter-In-Place order he put into affect March 25, 2020 to 'flatten the curve" of the spread of Covid-19. The order banned most construction, except in limited situations where the construction involves certain “essential and critical facilities” and services for a narrowly defined list of project types including affordable housing, homeless shelters and public works projects.
Every other city in Texas that has put a Shelter-In-Place order in place has deemed most all construction an essential business and is allowing construction to safely continue with appropriate social distancing guidelines in effect. These cities include Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, Waco and other cities through various county orders.
Please sign this petition in support of the thousands of workers who will potentially be out of a job due to the Shelter-In-Place order Mayor Steve Adler enacted if all current construction projects are not allowed to safely continue.
