WE DEMAND A "JUST CAUSE" STANDARD FOR CALIFORNIA STRIPPERS

Dancers at strip clubs are uniquely vulnerable to discriminatory and abusive firings. As "at will" employees, our bosses have the right to fire us for any reason except a discriminatory one, but everyone in our industry knows that discriminatory firings are commonplace. If you asked a room full of dancers to tell you the worst reason they were ever fired from a strip club, you would almost certainly hear story after story of blatantly illegal misconduct, from racial discrimination to sexual harassment to retaliation against dancers who dare speak up about workplace abuses, and worse. To protect dancers against these normalized abuses of power, the state of California should pass a new law that sets a "just cause" employment standard for dancers in strip clubs that requires clubs to set clear, objective, and fair standards for discipline and termination. Under a "just cause" standard, dancers would have an easier time enforcing our rights against clubs that commit unlawful firings, and we will be less likely to experience these abuses in the first place. Dancers need real change. Let us use the rebuilding and reimagining of a post-pandemic world to create safer, healthier, and more ethical spaces to continue to bring joy, escape, and connection to those who need it.
