Why this petition matters

Started by Mark Cooper

The decision to close Richmond Park to cyclists was taken in response to the current COVID-19 situation. The basis for the decision was said to be the actions of a small group of cyclists who were seen congregating at the entrances and an even smaller group who were observed riding closer than the safe-distancing guidelines advised.

The decision to close the Park to all cyclists was disproportionate and unfairly impacts the vast majority of people who wish to use the Park to cycle in accordance with the government's COVID-19 guidelines.  To promote compliance with the government's lockdown strategy, it is essential that people have the opportunity to exercise.

Not only are regular cyclists being unfairly denied access to the Park, but those with children have been denied the opportunity to ride with their families. While the Park is closed to vehicular traffic it serves as safe environment for young children to cycle with members of their household.

Since the Park has been closed to cyclists, cyclists have a choice: don't exercise or use the roads. Even though there is less traffic on the roads surrounding the Park, it represents a less safe environment for exercising and is unsuitable for young children.

Please re-open the Park to cyclists!
