Launch Government inquiry into the British Tabloids following death of Caroline Flack
Why this petition matters
I’m Josh, the creator of the 200,000 signature strong petition calling on the U.K. Government to launch an inquiry into the British Tabloid Press following the tragic passing of Caroline Flack.
This campaign is calling on our Government to launch an inquiry into the British Tabloids and their conduct following the maltreatment of those in the public eye including; Caroline Flack, Harry and Meghan Markle, to name a few. The headlines, harassment and trial by media has to end and they must be held accountable.
In 2011, the Government launched a public inquiry into the culture, practices and ethics of the British press following the News International phone hacking scandal, chaired by Lord Justice Leveson.
Almost a decade later and we are still seeing similar issues in the press. We are campaigning for an inquiry into the practices and policies of mainstream media organisations and social media platforms in their efforts to protect members of the public from harm.
There are people out there who find that any form of state involvement with the press risks censoring/stifling free speech. This is not our aim. Instead we would like the government and media organisations to have open conversations to formulate a set of guidelines which find a balance between freedom of the press and rights of the public.
I’ve since made contact with the new secretary of state for digital culture media and sport, Oliver Dowden who I hope to meet with soon.
Given that the petition has reached the 100,000 threshold for it to be discussed in the House of Commons, I will be working with Change.org to print the signatures and deliver them personally to parliament.
