Abuse of Government Power

The United States government and many branches of the US government go after innocent people often due to misinformation or manipulation of information.

The 6th amendment of the constitution includes the right to obtain witnesses and to retain counsel but when a person does not have the financial resources to obtain counsel so that witnesses and evidence can be submitted, citizens of this country are left to suffer dire consequences like the government garnishing wages, garnishing tax refunds, and even imprisonment.

INSPIRATION FOR THIS PETITION

My ex-husband forged my signature which landed me with a government civil lawsuit for “stealing investor money”. I could not afford an attorney to protect myself and provide evidence of innocence. When I offered my email and phone records, I was told they represented the government, and I would have to obtain my own counsel. I was told I had to sign the settlement or be taken to federal court. The attorneys simply want a win on their case. We are numbers to the government and their representation- nothing more. They do not care how it affects people and their families.

As a mother of three young boys with no financial resources and eventually to end up in a homeless shelter system, I was intimidated, bullied into signing a document I knew I could never satisfy. Now my tax returns are garnished, and my wages will be garnished up to approximately 15% for the rest of my life with interest accruing. I am not the only one who has faced this awful reality there are and will be many more unless we take a stand.

I propose: if the government is to place a case against any citizen, it should provide counsel for any person that is unable to afford one. Furthermore, no document, judgment or settlement should be considered valid if signed without the legal representation. We must take a stand for our rights and freedom against a government that rewards those that can buy their freedom but persecutes those without.

I ask you to please sign this petition so that we may change the law and policies ensuring that every citizen is protected and not bullied into by the government and their attorneys. We must take a stand together. Thank you.
