Save Dewley Hill from Coal Mining
Save Dewley Hill from Coal Mining
Why this petition matters
Not content with attempts to destroy Druridge Bay to mine millions of tonnes of coal in Northumberland, Banks Mining Group now want to desecrate Newcastle’s green belt for a huge open-cast mine.
Banks want to mine 800,000 tonnes of coal and 400,000 tonnes of fireclay at Dewley Hill, in Throckley (16/00117/SCO), destroying mature trees, grassland, wetland and hedgerows and public rights of way.
Stripping the land for this dirty fuel will devastate wildlife habitats and increase the risk of flooding and chemical contamination in ground water.
Noise and dust from operations and HGVs will have a negative impact on local residents and amenities.
Over 250 acres of green open space could be lost, at a time when Britain is heading for a coal free economy in an attempt to tackle climate change.
Banks’ latest plans for environmental destruction are simply not acceptable, given that we are now facing a climate catastrophe.
Don’t let dirty coal cast a shadow on Newcastle’s green lungs and compromise our future.
Please sign to say no to fossil fuels and keep our green belt green.
