FINALLY Erect The Historical Marker For Jesse Washington
FINALLY Erect The Historical Marker For Jesse Washington
Why this petition matters
In the year 1916, a young African-American man named Jesse Washington was brutally lynched in Waco, Texas, following a short trial and a 4-minute deliberation period from an all-white jury.
This crime was incredibly heinous, extremely grotesque and absolutely horrible. Not only was Mr. Washington hanged, he was also burned, castrated, his remains were sold as souvenirs, and his charred body was ultimately buried in an unmarked grave in a local Potters Field.
The time has come to finally finish and erect the historical marker in Waco, Texas that has been in the works for years. We are demanding that the Texas Historical Commission finally complete the marker which will memorialize Jesse Washington, and expose the atrocious crimes that the citizens of Waco (who were never held responsible for their actions) committed against him.
This petition has been created to express frustration with the THC and the lack of effort that has been put forward towards completing this historical marker. It is the first step towards healing from this monstrous crime- acknowledgement from the government that it happened. We ask that the marker be erected within the year 2021.
