Why this petition matters

Started by Cabarita Community Inc

Urgently address the need for safer pedestrian and cycling access to the Lake Primary School from both McEdward Street end of Seventeenth St. and Dyar Avenue.

Cabarita Community Inc and the community members below believe that there is an urgent need for action due to high risk of injury to pedestrians or cyclists.

By signing this petition it shows we support Cabarita Community Inc’s following recommendations: -

1)     That a path needs to be installed on the Brindabella Estate side of 17th St so that it connects to the school crossing.  This path should also extend to Dyar Avenue/Lake car park so that it can also support families from the new estates in Mildura South.

2)     That Dyar Avenue in Cabarita requires widening similar to McEdward Street to better accommodate the number of cars now utilising this route.  This road should have either a bike lane or a separate trail to accommodate cycling and pedestrians for the full length to Dow Avenue.

3)     An extension of the school 40km speed zone should also be extended to Dyar Avenue.

4)     A future plan with is also required to support increased pedestrian and bicycle traffic from the new subdivisions in Mildura South and that a community consultation process should be undertaken to investigate the potential use of the college lease land around Lake Hawthorn/Rivaside Avenue to create a safe trail away from busy roads.  This concept would include the realignment of boundaries to take college lease out of the lakebed, and create a public easement to create the trail connection.  This zone would connect to the wetlands and offer the chance to beautify the area and protect the environment for future generations.  We note that the Mildura South Plan currently states this college lease land could be recreational zoned which would be greatly beneficial however schools would lose income so we suggest an incorporation of some small scale commercial zoning or other method to create equivalent or higher income streams for the college trust.

We believe that by implementing these changes MRCC will be supporting our community to encourage a more active lifestyle and improve the general safety, fitness and wellbeing of our local students, extended families, local residents as well as improve the potential tourism benefits of the region.
