Why this petition matters

Started by Teach Consent

Despite the recent update in the Relationship, Sex and Education Curriculum, it is still possible for a child to get to year 11 without having been taught about sexual consent. Though sexual consent is covered by the curriculum, the guidance remains that schools are only mandated to cover this content "by the end of secondary" school. This is too late. With the current outpouring of experiences of sexual harassment and assault from school-age pupils, it is more important than ever to make sure that young people are informed about sexual consent from an early age. Additionally, ever-increasing access to social media and the internet means that students must also be made aware of sexual consent in this context as well from Year 7. Students at this age are already aware of and engaged with behaviour of a sexual nature (including online), and thus a delay in education surrounding this topic does not protect young people, but rather harms them, by not giving them the skills and understanding they need to deal with the world around them. It must be mandatory for all schools to teach sexual consent from Year 7, with no exceptions.
