Why this petition matters

Started by Phil Le Brun

Our mental health should be considered as important as our body’s.

Recent tragedies have shown us the danger of tabloid magazines using lies, gossip and mentally abusive content to sell copies. This preys on the most vulnerable and makes people feel like they're not enough.

Let’s hold them accountable by making these warnings real and putting them on publications seeking to exploit, shame and profit from mentally harmful content.

These magazines have a responsibility to warn people about the negative impact they can have on mental health.  In the wake of Caroline Flack's death, Caroline's law is gaining support, aiming to make it a criminal offence for the British media to “knowingly and relentlessly bully a person, whether they be in the public eye or not, up to the point that they take their own life.” And the government is pushing for social media companies to crack down on “unacceptable content” this regulation  should extend to the real world too, with cigarette style warning messages, so people understand the real impact of what they are buying / reading.

Mimi Gray, founder of online movement Visual Diet said, “We must all reflect on how we consume media to create a kinder world, where success is not measured by social metrics or shock value, but by wellbeing and positive mental health”
