Friend of the Earth program needs your signature to ask Major Online Travel Agencies to delist hotels that keep endangered lemurs in captivity in Madagascar.

We will send all signatures of this petition to the travel agencies and we will ask for feedback and updates on the undertaken measures. We will then provide you with updates here.

Lemurs are mammals of the order Primates. There are around 100 existing species and they are all native to the island of Madagascar. Many lemur species are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and hunting. Illegal logging, widespread poverty, and political instability hinder and undermine conservation efforts. Because of these threats and their declining numbers, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considers lemurs to be the world's most endangered mammals, noting that as of 2013 up to 90% of all lemur species face extinction within the next 20 to 25 years.

The illegal pet trade in Madagascar adds to threats lemurs face like habitat loss and climate change, according to the most in-depth study ('Illegal captive lemurs in Madagascar' by Kim E. Reuter Melissa S. Schaefer, 2017). Hotels and restaurants who draw profits from tourism also like to keep pet lemurs due to the photo opportunities it presents for visitors. Interviews and extrapolated data predicted that around 28,000 lemurs were taken into captivity between 2010 and mid-2013. Of the lemurs that were seen in different areas, 28 percent of the species were ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), followed by others like common brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus) and crowned lemurs — of which there are only around 1,000 individuals estimated left in the wild.

Friend of the Earth has identified hotels with captive lemurs proposed on the popular online travel agencies. This is unacceptable and should be prevented to send a strong message to those hotels and requesting them compensation measures to be put back on the list.

THANK YOU for sharing and signing this petition!
