Why this petition matters

Started by Citizens for a Great School

While fully supportive of vast improvements to the high school, Citizens for a Great School advocates for a referendum by all residents of the district to approve any new debt for a new or renovated high school. QV already spends a record amount per student and has large debt obligations.  Consider:

1. The School Board is considering almost doubling the size of the school;

2. The Board has chosen a site that will have an acquisition and site prep cost in excess of $30 million— prior to spending any money on roads, utilities or buildings, and the Board chose a site that has attributes and potential slides similar to the nearby Walmart site;

3. While holding substantial cash reserves, the Board continues to increase our taxes while at the same time QV spends $27,000 per student, per year, when comparable schools spend less than $20,000;

4. QV already has debt and pension obligations that exceed $145,000,000.  The proposed new school could add another $100,000,000 in debt and cause taxpayers to face tax increases for many years to come;

5. High taxes will hurt those on fixed income and lower property values;

6. To meet the proposed debt obligation, taxes will have to increase every year for many years to come.

Before the QV School Board commits to building the new high school and adding large, new debt obligations, we are demanding complete transparency of the decision-making process, a referendum that will allow all citizens of the QV school district to have a say on this very impactful decision. If you agree, join our effort and sign the petition!
