Why this petition matters

Started by Simon Whitworth

The Deanburn Verge community hedgerow is a much loved wildlife garden in Linlithgow, Scotland, looked after by volunteers and threatened by the bulldozer. West Lothian Council may allow access to a new CALA housing estate right through it, or turn it into a hard footpath. Neither the Council nor the developer actually own it, but there's plenty of flat grass roadside along from it that the Landowner does own and could be used for the road junction. The Verge has been tended by locals since the 1970s. First it was fenced and mowed, then had spring bulbs and summer flowers added, and seven years ago, inspired by the biodiversity crisis, it was turned into a wildlife garden. It is alive with native hedging and flowers, birds, bees and insects all year round and looks stunning. It helped our local gardening trust, Burgh Beautiful win a Britain in Boom Gold Award. Road access to the housing site was never intended for this place - the Scottish Government Reporter showed it elsewhere, so we always thought the hedgerow would be spared. Now it is at risk at the sweep of a pen held by West Lothian Council and CALA Homes. In a recent planning meeting planning permission was deferred to think about access, so we have a real chance to save it. Help us, please. SAVE DON'T PAVE DEANBURN VERGE.
